GYM ETIQUETTE & CODE OF CONDUCT

Introduction: At DAK Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we pride ourselves on maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all our students. To ensure everyone has a positive training experience, we require all members and visitors to adhere to the following Gym Etiquette and Code of Conduct.

1. Hygiene & Cleanliness

Maintaining a high standard of personal hygiene is mandatory for the safety and comfort of everyone on the mats.

  • Clean Gear: All training gear (Gi, No-Gi attire, rash guards, shorts) must be washed after every training session. Do not wear unwashed or smelly gear to class.

  • Personal Hygiene: Please ensure your body and hair are clean before stepping onto the mats. Deodorant is highly recommended.

  • Nails Trimmed: Finger and toe nails must be kept short and filed to prevent scratching and injuring your training partners.

  • No Shoes on the Mats: Shoes, sandals, or street footwear are strictly prohibited on the training mats.

  • Footwear off the Mats: You must wear shoes or sandals anytime you step off the mats, especially when using the restrooms or walking around the facility. Bare feet are only allowed on the training mats.

  • Sickness & Skin Infections: If you are feeling unwell, have a cold, or suspect you have any skin infection (e.g., ringworm, staph), do not come to train. Notify the instructors and wait until you are fully cleared by a doctor before returning.

2. Respect & Conduct

Jiu-Jitsu is built on a foundation of mutual respect and discipline.

  • Respect the Instructors: Pay attention when the instructor is demonstrating a technique. Do not talk over the instructor or disrupt the class.

  • Respect Your Partners: Treat your training partners with care. The goal is to learn and grow together, not to injure one another. Always apply submissions with control and give your partner ample time to tap.

  • The “Tap”: Respect the tap immediately. Whether it’s a physical tap, a verbal tap, or a sign of distress, you must stop immediately.

  • Ego Left at the Door: There is no place for ego on the mats. Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

  • Appropriate Language: Maintain a family-friendly environment. Profanity, offensive language, or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.

3. Facility Rules

Our 8,000-square-foot facility is our second home. Please help us keep it in top condition.

  • Timeliness: Arrive at least 10-15 minutes before your scheduled class begins. If you are late, wait at the edge of the mat until the instructor gives you permission to join.

  • Equipment Care: Treat all gym equipment, heavy bags, and facilities with respect. Return any borrowed gear to its proper place after use.

  • No Food or Drink on the Mats: Only water or sports drinks in sealable bottles are allowed near the mat area. Absolutely no food or chewing gum on the mats.

  • Personal Belongings: Keep your bags and personal items stored neatly in the designated cubbies or locker areas. DAK BJJ is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

4. Dress Code

Appropriate training attire is required for all classes.

  • Gi Classes: A clean, properly fitted BJJ Gi is required. Rash guards underneath the Gi jacket are recommended.

  • No-Gi Classes: Board shorts (without pockets or metal zippers), spats, and a rash guard or fitted athletic shirt are required. Loose t-shirts are discouraged as fingers can easily get caught in them.

  • Jewelry: All jewelry, including rings, necklaces, earrings, and watches, must be removed before training to prevent injuries.

5. Enforcement

Failure to comply with these etiquette guidelines may result in a verbal warning, suspension from classes, or, in severe cases, termination of membership without a refund.

By stepping onto the mats at DAK Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you acknowledge and agree to abide by these rules.
